Kirsters Baish| Former President Barack Obama was all about the “legacy” he would be leaving behind after his time in office. Unfortunately for him, that legacy seems to be falling apart more and more every single day. It started with the multiple scandals, from Benghazi all the way to Uranium One. Not a good start for a “legacy.” Then, there were President Trump’s multiple reversals of legislation that Obama had passed during his time as POTUS. Another knock on Obama’s “legacy.”
Now, another crushing blow has totally dismantled everything Obama attempted to accomplish.
The Chicago Tribune reports that multiple groups in Chicago have accused former President Barack Obama of having pulled a “bait and switch” when it came to his proposed presidential library. They are claiming that it isn’t a library at all, and instead is all a part of an attempt to take over public park land and to use it for whoever the developer feels like using it for.
Conservative Tribune reported on the matter:
A lawsuit is now moving forward, claiming that the planned Obama monstrosity is not what people agreed to.
“Protect Our Parks Inc. also claims in its lawsuit, which was filed in U.S. District Court on Monday, that the Chicago Park District and the City of Chicago don’t have the authority to transfer public parkland to a nongovernmental entity such as the Obama Foundation,” the Tribune reported.
The proposal for Obama’s library was originally to have the Chicago Park District sell land for the facility to the city. The city would then, in turn, least the land to the Obama Foundation. But that scheme isn’t sitting well with many area residents.
The Chicago Tribune explained, “The lawsuit, which also names three Chicago-area residents as plaintiffs, argues that such a maneuver would violate state law and represents ‘a short con shell game, a corrupt scheme to deceive and seemingly legitimize an illegal land grab.”
To put it simply, people are angry that this park land, which was meant to be free for people to use, would be given to private ownership under Obama’s demands.
The Tribune went on, “The plaintiffs accuse the Obamas of committing an about-face on original plans for the Jackson Park site to be home to a national presidential library that would hold historic documents and archives from Barack Obama’s presidency under the National Archives and Records Administration’s supervision.”
People are left wondering if the proposed library is actually more of a library or a recreational center.
Teaparty.org writes, “The center will also include a large gym, a ‘community forum’ and an outdoor plaza.”
Fox News reports that the Cultural Landscape Foundation’s Charles A. Birnbaum explained, “The people of Chicago were told they would get a presidential library administered by the National Archives, a federal facility, in exchange for the confiscation of historic parkland.” This group has also criticized Obama’s plan. Birnbaum stated, “Instead, they’re getting a privately operated entertainment campus with a 235-foot-tall tower, a recording studio, auditorium and sports facility, and other amenities.”
Fox News reported in January that the parking lot would take precious land from the Chicago Park District, as they would be paving over it.
Earlier in the year, an open letter was released. It read, that “the nearby park ought to be preserved for future generations and not given to a private entity for development into a parking lot.”
Things are not looking good for Obama’s “legacy.” The only thing he has left behind is a failed reputation.
