Media Claims That There Have Been 18 School Shootings in 2018… Here are the Facts

Kirsters Baish| This week’s horrific school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, has left many news outlets seeming to try to convince the American people that an insane amount of school shootings have taken place in 2018. They pushed the claim that Wednesday’s shooting was the 18th this calendar year so far. This is definitely false information, and there is no way that Democrats are going to get away with a claim like this.

ABC News reported that there have been 18 school shootings in just the first 45 days of the new year. A nonprofit group made the claim.

Then, the New York Daily News reported “There have been 18 school shootings so far this year, including one that claimed 17 lives at a Florida public school Wednesday.”

WUSA9 stated that in just the first couple of months of 2018, there have been 18 school shootings all across the United States of America.

The narrative that there have already been 18 school shootings this year game from the anti-gun group Everytown for Gun Safety. If you’re looking for real fact, here they are:

There have been two occasions during which an individual shot themselves on school properties. There was one incident that took place on January 3, 2018. A man shot himself in a former school’s parking lot. Then, on January 10, a teenager killed himself in an Arizona elementary school restroom.

There have been four occasions during which a bullet was fired through a school or dorm room’s window. One incident took place on January 4. A gun was fired at a high school in Seattle, Washington. The bullet came through an office window. No one was hurt in the incident. Then, on January 10, a single shot was fired breaking a classroom window at California State University. No one was reportedly injured. Also on January 10, a bullet was accidentally fired through a wall in a classroom as the Grayson College Criminal Justice Center in Texas. No one was injured there either. Then, on January 15, a single bullet went through a residential hall’s dorm room. No injures were reported from that location either.

A Mobile, Alabama high school student fired a fun on campus on January 25. No one was injured. Then on January 26, a Dearborn, Michigan school had shots fired from a car in their parking lot. No injures there either.

The Daily Wire reported:

On February 5, in Maplewood, Minnesota, a third-grader pulled the trigger on a cop’s gun. No one was injured. On February 8, in New York, a shot was fired inside Metropolitan High School. No one was injured.

Here are the cases where someone was injured other than the shooter:

January 22, Italy, Texas: a teenage girl was wounded by shots from a semi-automatic handgun. The same day, in Gentilly, Louisiana, a 14-year-old boy was injured in a shooting. February 1, Los Angeles, California: five children were injured in an accidental shooting. February 5, Maryland: a teenager was shot and injured outside of a high school.

While Wednesday’s school shooting was devastating and we lost 17 innocent victims, there was only one real school shooting this year. We are not downplaying the horrific loss that struck our country this week, however we must set the record straight, and that record says that there has been all of one school shooting.
